Sonia Gandhi joins Manmohan-Mayawati luncheon meeting

NEW DELHI: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati sought from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh a Rs. 15,000-crore soft infrastructure loan for the development of the State when she called on him here on Saturday.

United Progressive Alliance chairperson Sonia Gandhi joined Dr. Singh and Ms. Mayawati at the 75-minute-long luncheon meeting at the Prime Minister’s official residence on Race Course Road.

Ms. Mayawati was accompanied by her Cabinet colleague Satish Chandra Mishra. From all indications the Congress is wooing Ms. Mayawati for her support to the UPA’s candidate in the Presidential polls. On Friday, Ms. Gandhi hosted tea for Ms. Mayawati which lasted well over an hour. However, emerging from the meeting, the Bahujan Samaj Party leader was non-committal. She said she would hold consultations within her party before revealing her mind.

On Friday, however, a late-night meeting of BSP’s national executive and coordinators authorised Ms. Mayawati to take a "final decision."
