Cloud over Mulayam govt, Governor meets Kalam

Tuesday 5 December 2006

NEW DELHI, DECEMBER 4: Uttar Pradesh Governor TV Rajeshwar Rao on Monday called on President APJ Abdul Kalam and is learnt to have apprised him about the law and order situation in the state. On Sunday, Rao had met Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil with the same agenda. The meetings assume significance in the background of the demand by main state opposition parties - BJP and BSP - for the President’s rule in the state for conduct of free and fair Assembly polls scheduled early next year.

The BJP has accused that the state is being run at the mercy of criminals and mafia and says the UP Government cannot secure the life, liberty and property of citizens in the state. A delegation of senior BJP leaders too from the state, led by BJP deputy leader in the Rajya Sabha Sushma Swaraj, met the President on Sunday and petitioned for the dismissal of the Mulayam Government.

The BSP too has been crying foul against the SP-led Government for worsening law and order situation. It did not participate in the recently held elections for urban local bodies accusing the Government of manipulating them.

Congress, which is trying to gain lost ground in the state, is also campaigning against the state government though it has not said anything officially on the issue of the President’s rule.
