No cracks in Congress-PDP ties: Ambika Soni

Sunday 3 September 2006

Special correspondant

NEW DELHI: Congress leader Ambika Soni on Saturday said the party was clear that relations between it and Jammu and Kashmir People’s Democratic Party would be conducted on the basis of the agreed common minimum programme (CMP).

"There is no question of any cracks developing in the coalition. The Congress president Sonia Gandhi has made it very clear that Congress-PDP has to work on the basis of the CMP," Ms. Soni told The Hindu here.

Union Minister Ms. Soni, who holds the charge of party affairs in the State, said she was in constant touch both with the PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti and Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad during the turn of events in the State leading to the exit of PDP’s Muzaffar Hussein Beigh.

She said Ms. Mufti informed both the Chief Minister and the Congress central leadership of the decision to effect a change in the PDP Legislature Party leader.

Congress’ contention

The Congress on Friday said that as per the coalition arrangement, it was for the PDP to decide who would be its nominee in the Council of Ministers.

Amid reports of differences between the two parties at the State level, developments took a sudden turn on Thursday when the PDP decided to recall Deputy Chief Minister Beigh from the Azad Government. Mr. Beigh resigned from the post on Saturday.
