New Delhi: The Election Commission (EC) issued notices to those leaders with official security, including Amethi Member of Parliament Rahul Gandhi, to leave the Rae Bareli constituency by 5pm yesterday.

The order came ahead of campaigning in the high-profile constituency coming to an end yesterday evening.

Congress party president Sonia Gandhi is seeking re-election from Rae Bareli after resigning from it following the "office of profit" controversy. Elections will be held tomorrow. Daughter Priyanka Vadra will stay back in Rae Bareli since she has been appointed the election agent of Sonia.

Notice

The EC order said that political functionaries, who were not voters, had to leave the constituency immediately after the electioneering got over yesterday.

Other leaders who received the notice were Sonia Gandhi, Bharatiya Janata Party’s Vinay Katiyar and Samajwadi Party’s Rajkumar Choudhary.

The EC also ordered removal of all posters from government buildings, hoardings and banners, which have been posted without the permission of the municipal corporation.

Rae Bareli District Magistrate said if the candidates failed to remove the posters and banners by Friday midnight, the municipal corporation would carry out the cleansing exercise yesterday and the expenses would be borne by the respective candidates. The 12-hour deadline ended at 4am yesterday since the notice was given at 4pm on Friday.
