OBC Muslims to burn Bukhari’s effigy

Thursday 20 April 2006

NEW DELHI: The assault on journalists by supporters of Jama Masjid Imam Syed Ahmad Bukhari’s men has earned the cleric the wrath of OBC Muslims, who have decided to burn his effigy on Thursday.

This was announced by Ali Anwar, JD-U MP of Rajya Sabha whose organisation of OBC Muslims - All India Pasmanda Muslim Mahaj - has been spearheading a campaign for reservations for OBC Muslims.

The Imam and his men, according to eyewitness accounts, had lunged at a journalist when he asked Bukhari about his stand on the reservations for OBC Muslims.

Anwar, who was nominated to the Rajya Sabha on the strength of his OBC credentials, said that Imam’s reaction reflected the casteist mindset of upper-caste Muslims.
