Tamil Nadu did not witness any caste-related violence: Vaiko

PUDUKOTTAI: Continuing his election campaign, the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) general secretary Vaiko on Monday claimed that there was a wave in favour of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.

Campaigning at Pudukottai Town in support of the AIADMK candidate R. Nedunchezhiyan contesting in Pudukottai Assembly constituency, Mr. Vaiko said welfare schemes such as the Uzhavar Padugappu Thittam, free textbooks and free cycle schemes launched by the ruling AIADMK government went well with the masses. Further, the State did not witness any caste-related violence and a peaceful atmosphere prevailed during the AIADMK rule. The people had come to realise this aspect, he said. The AIADMK government acted speedily when the tsunami struck and later when the State was battered by floods.

The public accorded a huge reception wherever the Chief Minister went. The AIADMK-led combine would obtain over 200 seats in the ensuing assembly elections, he said. Criticising the DMK, he said the public would not get fooled by its promises including free distribution of colour TV sets and supply of one kilogram rice for Rs.2. Though being part of the United Progressive Alliance government at the Centre, the DMK had not taken any steps to reduce the price of rice, he alleged. People were aware of these aspects and have already taken a decision, he said.
