`At the same time, it is against the inhuman treatment being meted out to him’

ALAPPUZHA: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) Polit Bureau member and Leader of the Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan has said his party’s opposition to the communal politics of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leader Abdul Nasir Maudany will continue, but the party is against the inhuman treatment being meted out to the PDP leader who is languishing in a Coimbatore jail.

Answering questions at a meet-the-press programme of the Alappuzha Press Club on Saturday, Mr. Achuthanandan said the leaders and followers of the PDP knew well that the CPI(M) had not changed its opposition to communalism. The PDP and other organisations had declared their support to the Left Democratic Front (LDF) knowing the fact well.

Mr. Achuthanandan said that though the United Democratic Front (UDF) had promised to provide all support for getting bail for Mr. Maudany during the Assembly election campaign in 2001, it had not done anything to fulfil the promise when it assumed power.

To scrutinise projects

Mr. Achuthanandan said the LDF Government that would assume power after the elections would scrutinize the various agreements signed by the State Government with funding agencies such as the Asian Development Bank (ADB) for implementing projects like the Smart City, and suggest various changes in the agreements to protect the State’s interests.

Concept of development

The Leader of the Opposition said his concept of development was the uplift of the agriculture sector and traditional industries which provide employment to about half of the State’s population. On the statement of Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president Ramesh Chennithala that his agitations against certain decisions of the Government lacked the support of the CPI(M), Mr. Achuthanandan said he had organised agitations in his capacity as Leader of the Opposition and member of the CPI (M) Polit Bureau. "I had organised a series of agitations against the efforts of some groups to take over the wealth of the State and had received the wholehearted support of the public." He pointed out that the CPI(M) district committees in Thiruvanamthapuram and Idukki had supported his agitations in those districts. Whoever organised such agitations would get the support of the public.

"I braved the terrible conditions in forests to find facts of encroachment and only after that organised agitations," he said. Mr. Achuthanandan said the UDF Government had failed to bring the investment promised in the Global Investors’ Meeting and had destroyed the traditional industries in the State.
