Prayers for Mulayam’s long life

Sunday 26 March 2006

Lucknow, March 25: Special prayers were held today for long and healthy life of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav, under sustained attack from BSP, Congress and BJP.

Even some Cabinet Ministers joined in offering prayers and performing yagnas for the well-being of Yadav.

The Prajapati Samaj, led by its leader Dayaram Prajapati, a Cabinet Minister, performed a yagna before the Vidhan Bhavan.

PWD Minister and Yadav’s younger brother Shivpal Singh Yadav and Cooperatives Minister Shardanand Anchal will attend a similar religious function tomorrow.

Over 101 Brahmins performed a yagna before the Vidhan Bhavan and chanted mantras for long and healthy life of the Chief Minister.

Prajapati, addressing a gathering on the occasion, asked members of the Samaj to greet each other with "Jai Mulayam" instead of the customary "namaste".

Asked about the sudden need to perform prayers, the Minister said Yadav was not keeping a good health for sometime.

Prayers and pujas are meant to wish him a long life, he said.

Listing achievements of the SP-led coalition government, he said the people of the state wanted Yadav to live long to serve people.

The Chief Minister reportedly had some back problem and was undergoing physiotherapy. (Agencies)
