To resign from NAC, Rajya Sabha

VIJAYAWADA: Within hours of Congress president Sonia Gandhi announcing her resignation from the post of chairperson of the National Advisory Council and as member of the Lok Sabha, Union Minister of State for Commerce Jairam Ramesh, also a member of the NAC, said he would "follow the example set by Soniaji".

To meet Sonia Gandhi

"I will meet Soniaji tomorrow and offer my resignation from the membership of both the NAC and Rajya Sabha," he told The Hindu at Gannavaram airport here on his way to Delhi.

Mr. Ramesh said "Soniaji has upheld the best traditions of public service" by resigning. "Therefore, it is only natural that I, being a member of the NAC, follow her example."

Mr. Ramesh became a member of the NAC in June 2004, and was sworn in as a member of the Rajya Sabha on July 5, 2004, after he was elected from Andhra Pradesh.

Mr. Ramesh cut short his tour of Guntur district, where he was acquainting himself with the problems of weavers and growers of tobacco and chilli, to return to the capital following day’s political developments.
