NEW DELHI: This is the text of the statement made by Congress president Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi on Thursday after submitting her resignation:

"For two days some people are creating an atmosphere in the country as if the Government and Parliament was being used only for my benefit. This has caused extreme anguish to me.

"I have said it before that I have not stepped into political and public life for personal gain. I have taken a pledge to serve the country, Indian society and protect secular values.

"Keeping in view my values of public life, ideals of politics and my beliefs, I have tendered my resignation from the Lok Sabha as also from the National Advisory Council. "I have total faith that my Rae Bareli constituents and the entire country would understand my sentiments."
