ISLAMABAD: Justice Rana Bhagwandas, the seniormost judge of the Pakistani Supreme Court, on Friday took charge as the acting Chief Justice, becoming the first Hindu to assume the top post.
Justice Bhagwandas (63), one of the few Hindu judges in the country, took the oath, administered by Justice Saiyed Saeed Ashhad, at the Sindh Bench in Karachi.
The incumbent, Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhary, is leaving on a 10-day visit to China. Hailing from Karachi, Mr. Justice Bhagwandas is known for his hold on the constitutional law. He joined the judicial service in 1967, and made his way up as sessions judge and judge of the Sindh High Court. He had also done his Masters in Islamic studies. - PTI
