CELEBRATION TIME: The former Prime Minister, V.P. Singh, cutting a cake to celebrate his 74th birthday in New Delhi on Saturday.

NEW DELHI: The 74th birthday of the former Prime Minister, V.P. Singh, was celebrated as garib divas at his Teen Murti Marg residence here on Saturday. Jan Chetna Manch, an organisation working for the welfare of slum-dwellers, organised a small function to mark the occasion.

A large number of people, mostly slum-dwellers, reached the former Prime Minister’s residence around noon carrying garlands and bouquets to wish their leader on his birthday. Clad in white kurta-pyjama, Mr. Singh cut the birthday cake amid beating of drums. He thanked the people for their love and support.

In a message to fellow-countrymen, Mr. Singh said the nation should move ahead on the path of progress and the poor too should have a share in it. Replying to a query on his birthday coinciding with the anniversary of the Emergency, Mr. Singh described Indira Gandhi as a great leader and said her contribution cannot be forgotten.
