Officials `not available’ to issue caste certificates: ex-minister

Tuesday 7 June 2005

PONDICHERRY: K. Lakshminarayanan, MLA and former Education Minister, has called upon the Revenue and Education departments to ensure that the officials authorised to issue caste and community certificates to students were available at their respective offices in village and semi-urban locations.

Addressing newspersons here on Monday, Mr. Lakshminarayanan said he had been receiving complaints from students of poor families that they were running from pillar to post to get the certificates. The last dates for submission of the applications to higher educational institutions is fast approaching.

While the Government had decided to provide quota for students of Most Backward Classes in educational institutions, the difficulty in getting certificates continued.

He said the administration should come out with its stand clearly on the `origin and migrant` issue relating to the scheduled caste candidates.
