"Assam is the mother state of northeastern region" Adequate financial support would be provided for expeditious completion of infrastructure projects

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday told a delegation of the All-Assam Students Union (AASU) that expeditious steps would be taken to update and revise the voters’ list and issue identity cards to all registered voters in Assam.

At a tripartite meeting, called to review the implementation of the Assam Accord, Dr. Singh said that both he and Home Minister Shivraj Patil would visit the border areas and see the fencing work along the India-Bangladesh border. Mr. Patil and Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi were present at the meeting that lasted for nearly two-and-a-half hours.

Dr. Singh urged the AASU leaders to work with the Assam Government and the Centre to create a climate of peace and stability in the State and the entire northeastern region that would culminate in rapid economic development of the region.

He said: ``Assam is truly the mother state of the northeastern region of our country. If Assam prospers, so will the whole of northeast. All the people of Assam and the northeastern region must come together and create a climate of peace and stability so that the full potential of the region can be unleashed. Our effort should be that while we solve old problems we should not create new problems.’’
