Mayawati demands more quota for SC/STs

Friday 15 April 2005

Bhubaneswar, April 15. (PTI): When reservation for the SCs and STs in Orissa is 38 per cent in jobs, why is it only 20 per cent in education?

This question was today posed by Bahujan Samaj Party president Mayawati stating that the people should demand an answer from the government on this and get the anomaly corrected.

This was the reason why SCs and STs were not able to fill up the vacancies in government jobs, the BSP supremo said while launching the ’campaign against unequal reservation in jobs and education for the backward classes’ coinciding with the birth anniversary of Baba Saheb B.R.Ambedkar.

Holding the upper castes responsible for the continuing backwardness of those comprising the ’bahujan samaj’, Mayawati said the backward people had to rise and snatch their right to rule themselves as had happened thrice in Uttar Pradesh when she became chief minister.

"Everytime I became chief minister, I ensured that the government land was distributed among the backward classes benefitting a population of about ten lakh people," she said.
