Kanchi mutt’s junior Sankaracharya arrested

Monday 10 January 2005

KANCHEEPURAM: The junior Sankaracharya of Kanchi Mutt, Vijayendra Saraswathi, was taken into custody at 6 pm on Monday.

A large contingent of policemen were present both inside and outside the mutt premises when the junior seer was taken into custody.

The arrest was in connection with the murder of Sankararaman, a temple official.

The senior Sankaracharya, Jayendra Saraswathi, was arrested on November 11 in Mahboobnagar in Andhra Pradesh and was lodged in Vellore prison in Tamil Nadu on the next day. He is the main accused in the Sankararaman murder case.

With the arrest of both the seers, the centuries old mutt is now headless.

The senior acharya was granted conditional bail by the Supreme court on Monday morning.

Vijayendra Saraswathi was taken to the "forest bungalow" where normally the special team undertakes interrogation.

Mutt’s lawyer, Thyagarajan, later told newsmen that the police party simply "barged into" the mutt on Monday evening when the junior seer was performing his routine poojas.

"We do not know under what sections the junior seer has been taken into custody," he said adding that the entry of the police into the mutt premises, a place of religious worship, was nothing but a "trespass."
