CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu CM J Jayalalithaa on Friday said that her government was planning to build a wall along the state’s 1,076-km coastline as a shield against cyclones and tsunamis.
Jayalalithaa initially said such a project would cost Rs 3,000 crore. But after a meeting later with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, she said the projected cost would be Rs 2,000 crore more.
She said Singh reacted to the idea of a wall from Chennai to Kanyakumari by suggesting a loan from the World Bank or the Asian Development Bank.
She didn’t give any other details about the proposed wall or its environmental impact during an all-party meeting.
She also dismissed allegations that relief work was slow and pointed out that Tamil Nadu was already into the second phase of reconstruction unlike other tsunami-hit regions.
