EC rejects poll papers of Pakistani national

Wednesday 14 April 2004

JAMMU: Pro-Pakistani separatist outfits may have called for a boycott of polls in Jammu and Kashmir, but a Pakistani national filed nomination papers to contest the Jammu-Poonch parliamentary seat.

On Tuesday, the Election Commission rejected the nomination of 29-year-old Zulfikar Ali Rahat, who was fielded by Samajwadi Janata Party headed by former prime minister Chandra Shekhar.

Returning officer (deputy commissioner Jammu) Naveen Chowdhary said Rahat was confirmed to be a Pakistani national after inquiries were conducted into his credentials following the receipt of a complaint. His nomination was rejected after EC ordered a re-scrutiny.

Chowdhary said Rahat’s permanent resident certificate was fake and his name was not in the new voters list. ??On these bases, his nomination papers have been rejected and therefore instead of 27, there are only 26 contestants for Jammu Lok Sabha seat,’’ Chowdhary said.
