Debating India

India creating jobs in UK

Sunday 8 February 2004

Contrary to the assumption that Indian call centres are responsible for the loss of jobs in Britain, India has not only been creating more employment opportunities in the UK but also preserving those which otherwise would have been lost, High Commissioner for India Ronen Sen has said.

Launching the India International Foundation, an organisation aimed at promoting worldwide science, art and culture of India and charitable causes, the High Commissioner referred to the issue of the loss of jobs in the UK and said "but very little is heard about the jobs created here." "Thousands of millions of pounds are imported into this country, not only creating but preserving jobs which otherwise would have been lost. This is a two-way traffic in which both sides benefit. This is what we are trying to promote." Hardyal S. Luther, Founder-President of the Foundation, referred to the rapid progress made by India in diverse fields during the last half a century.

"Now the time has come to recognise and honour those who have attained distinction in different fields." The Foundation will give awards to such people annually, he said.

To mark the occasion, the High Commissioner presented a commemorative plaque to Luther, who is also the chief of the Mortgage Power, a nationwide network of Mortgage Brokers, in the UK.
