NEW DELHI : India shines today because Indira Gandhi launched the Green Revolution. No, this is not the latest press release from the Congress spokesperson, but the considered judgment of renowned economist Jeffrey D Sachs, who delivered the Coromandel lecture here at the national food security summit organised jointly by the M S Swaminathan Research Foundation and the World Food Programme.

As a macro-economist, I think Green Revolution uderpins the economic success,” said Prof Sachs. He drew attention to the fact that food security was not just a question of improving health and nutrition status of individual citizens but also of raising the economy’s productivity in general.

Delivering his valedictory address to the National Food security summit organised jointly by the MS Swaminathan Foundation and the World Food Programe, President APJ Abdul Kalam today waxed eloquent on the government’s new scheme PURA - providing urban amenities in rural areas.
