Khanduri invited to form government

Saturday 3 March 2007, by CHANDRAMOHAN*C.K.

DEHRA DUN: Uttar Pradesh Bharatiya Janata Party Legislature Party leader Major General (retd.) Bhuwan Chandra Khanduri announced on Friday that Governor Sudarshan Aggarwal had invited him to form the government.

"We have submitted the written consent of Independent MLA Rajender Singh Bhandari to the Governor, and the swearing-in ceremony will be held on March 6 or any other auspicious date after that. We have been asked to prove the majority in the House on March 20, and we will do it," Gen. Khanduri told reporters.

Earlier in the day, State Congress president Harish Rawat distributed compact discs to the media that, he said, proved that BJP cadres had attacked him and two Independent MLAs at Hotel Great Value on Thursday. "This shows that the BJP is resorting to strong arm tactics to gain majority by threatening Independent MLAs, and we deplore the incident," he said.

The independent MLAs also accused the BJP of trying to attack them and damaging hotel property. Major General Khanduri said the task before him was to provide a clean, functional government that would tackle the people’s problems.

"The thrust areas of the government would be to restore a proper style of working, institute financial discipline and promote the cottage industry, horticulture and the tapping of natural resources in a scientific way to boost the economy," he told The Hindu .
