V.P. Singh’s advice to Manmohan

Thursday 28 December 2006

New Delhi: Apparently unimpressed by the rosy picture of economic growth, former Prime Minsiter V.P. Singh on Wednesday had a dig at Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and advised him to visit a slum at least once a year to see the situation on the ground.

"You should visit a slum at least once a year. Whether it would improve things or not, at least people will feel satisfied," Mr. Singh appealed to the Prime Minister at a conference of Dalits and Minorities here.

The former Prime Minister’s remark was seen as a dig at the Prime Minister who has been talking of economic reforms, liberalisation and high growth rate.

He said Muslims should be given participation in power and not mere concessions and regretted that despite 16 years of implementation of the Mandal Commission, the backward Muslims have not got their rights.

He suggested that minorities be given a sub-quota in proportion to their population within the reservation under Mandal Commission recommendations. - PTI
