SEZs: JD (U) to launch agitation

NEW DELHI: The Janata Dal (United) on Sunday decided to launch a nation-wide agitation against Special Economic Zones (SEZs), billing them as a conspiracy by the UPA Government to displace farmers and deprive them of their livelihood.

The call for an agitation was given by JD (U) president Sharad Yadav at a Chetna Sammelan held here.

Conceding the development argument of the pro-SEZ lobby, he said: "No one is against development, but it cannot be at the expense of the poor. No fertile land should be used for setting up SEZs."

Mr. Yadav said in the eventuality of barren terrain being unavailable, then fertile land could be used on a lease basis. The farmer owning the tract of land should not be stripped of his rights to the property, he argued.
