UPA is vindictive: Fernandes

`Congress levelling baseless charges’

Udupi: Former Defence Minister George Fernandes said on Saturday that the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government is following a vindictive policy by making baseless charges against him.

Mr. Fernandes, who had come to inaugurate the Tonse Padumane Kambala at Kemmannu, told presspersons that chairperson of the UPA Sonia Gandhi nursed a grouse against him because he had exposed the corruption during Congress rule. It is for this reason her partymen were levelling absurd charges against him.

When Manmohan Singh took over as the Prime Minister, he had written a letter about the charges levelled against him by Congressmen, hence Dr. Singh should place the facts before the nation and take action. Till date, Dr. Singh had not told him anything. Even the previous Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee had not said anything against him.

Mr. Fernandes said that he had agreed to the purchase of Barak missiles on the advice of the then Navy Chief, who said that three naval battle ships required protection from Pakistan. The scientists had not said that the missiles were not wanted. This is a canard spread by the Congress party.

The Congress is not beyond misusing the CBI to suit its own purposes. A book written by a former CBI officer had stated that three former Prime Ministers had misused the CBI.

Mr. Fernandes said that the former Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka Siddaramaiah is an honest and a capable politician. He had told him not to join the Congress party.

Answering another question, he said that when a Hindu stood up for himself, it was called communalism. When a Muslim did the same, it was called secularism. The Christians are trying to be secular, Mr. Fernandes said.
