Vote for Jaya, secure a computer

Saturday 6 May 2006

The latest from freebie land AIADMK chief J Jayalalithaa has offered computers to all students clearing Plus-Two. Ostensibly to “improve their knowledge of computers and increase employment opportunities”, Jayalalithaa said the 5.27-lakh students who took the Plus-Two examinations this year would stand to gain from her offer. Jayalalithaa has already promised 10 kg of free rice and 4 g of gold free of cost for mangalsutras of girls belonging to below poverty line families for their marriage. She also promised to waive farmers co-operative loans.

Let me entertain you

Not to be outdone, DMK president M Karunanidhi, in his party manifesto, promised free colour television sets for all poor households so that the “woman can be entertained”.

Phoney offer? But the man making all the news is AIFB candidate P N Ammavasi who has his own glitzy list: Free mobile phones for each household, free cycles, free lifetime incoming calls and 20 kg of free rice, that too home delivered. Ammavasi has even promised set-top boxes along with his free colour TVs. His voters in Madurai’s Sholavandan are perplexed. They are not sure whether Ammavasi was making the offers because he is sure to lose or to just mock his seniors’ attempts to outdo each other with their freebies.
