NEW DELHI: A "mahapanchayat" of representatives of different castes belonging to Other Backward Classes (OBCs) was held at Jantar Mantar here on Tuesday in support of the Union Government’s proposal to reserve 27 per cent seats in Central universities and institutes of higher learning for OBCs.

A resolution passed at the mahapanchayat urged the Government to implement the proposal without any delay. It said the attitude of those opposing reservation was "negative" and "anti-people". Also, it added, reservation would give an opportunity to those who have remained backward due to socio-economic exploitation for a long time.

The mahapanchayat said it was in favour of providing reservation to poor families from upper castes also. The representatives also welcomed the idea of increasing the number of seats in higher education to accommodate people from all castes.
