"Bid to save Amar Singh’s membership"
Lucknow: The Government on Tuesday tabled a Bill in the Assembly turning the Uttar Pradesh Development Council (UPDC) into an autonomous body with powers such as those of a local authority.
When passed and approved by the Governor, it would be implemented with retrospective effect from October 15, 2003. The present council, headed by Mr. Amar Singh, had attracted investment worth more than Rs. 33,000 crore.
The chairman of the new council would be appointed for five years. Eleven persons from the department would be its members, while the Chief Secretary would be its convener.
The BJP leaders claimed the Bill was tabled only to save the Rajya Sabha membership of Mr. Singh. - UNI
