LUCKNOW, JUNE 16: The Samajwadi Party today announced its support for industrialist Anil Ambani for the Rajya Sabha elections from Uttar Pradesh. Mr. Ambani later filed his nomination papers as an independent candidate.

Talking to newspersons here, the SP general secretary, Amar Singh, said his party had the strength to get six members elected to the Rajya Sabha. While five names had already been announced, Mr. Ambani would be the sixth candidate to get the party’s support.

The SP’s support to Mr. Ambani might create problems for the Congress if it decides to field its own candidate. The party has only 16 members in the Assembly and its nominee can get elected only with the support of 19 additional votes from other parties. The other Samajwadi Party candidates - Jaya Bachchan, Bhagawati Singh, Ram Narayan Sahu, Nand Kishore Yadav and Kamal Akhtar - also filed their nomination papers today as also the two BJP candidates - Murli Manohar Joshi and Arun Shourie. The BJP-supported independent candidate, Lalit Suri, was also among those who filed their papers today. Eleven candidates, including the Bahujan Samaj Party leader, Mayawati, and S.C. Mishra of the party, have so far filed their papers against an equal number of seats to be filled by the elections. However, if the Congress decides to field a candidate, a contest would be inevitable.Tomorrow is the last date for the filing of papers.

No Congress support

PTI reports from New Delhi:

The Congress today dismissed the possibility of supporting Mr. Ambani in the Rajya Sabha election and did not rule out fielding its own candidate in the poll.

If Mr. Ambani is contesting on the Congress ticket, he has not come to us. Where is the question of support said the party spokesman, Satyavrata Chaturvedi. On the possibility of an electoral tie-up in the State for the Rajya Sabha polls, he said such possibilities were there but ruled out any such alignment with the Samajwadi Party.

Any possibility for a tie-up with SP for the Rajya Sabha polls is remote,he said.
