U.P. Speaker suspends hearing

Sunday 26 March 2006

LUCKNOW: Uttar Pradesh Speaker Mata Prasad Pandey on Saturday suspended the hearing in the case related to defection of 40 BSP MLAs to the Samajwadi Party in 2003.

Mr. Pandey said he would decide on the next date of hearing only after receiving Friday’s Supreme Court order. "I have asked both the parties to give me the certified copy of the SC verdict and only after going through the decision, the next date of hearing would be fixed."

BSP leader Swami Prasad Maurya moved a petition before the Speaker, urging him to suspend the hearing, as the apex court had stayed it.

Loktantrik Bahujan Dal leader Rajendra Singh Rana said the five MLAs who had joined the BSP should return to their party after the Supreme Court’s ruling. Otherwise his party would take action against them.
