NEW DELHI, MARCH 20 : Samajwadi Party general secretary and Rajya Sabha MP Amar Singh is yet to reply to a notice sent by the Election Commission (EC) on a petition seeking his disqualification as MP for holding two offices of profit. Singh is the second SP MP, after Jaya Bachchan, to receive the EC’s notice for being both chairperson of the UP Development Council and MP as he enjoys perks and remunerations from both offices. Bachchan has since been disqualified as MP.
??I received the EC notice 10 days ago, but I have not had the time to reply and give my explanation as I have been busy with Parliament and the elections to Rajya Sabha,’’ said Singh.??Then, I will be going to Assam to campaign for the Assembly elections. So I think it will be a while before I reply.’’
While Singh was confident his party would field and elect Bachchan to victory yet again once the EC notified her seat vacant and set the date for a by-election, he was not sure when and how long it would take. ??We will wait for the notification,’’ he said, adding, ??I hope the EC will take cognizance of similar complaints coming from other parties, whether it is about Sonia Gandhi, Dr Karan Singh or Speaker Somnath Chatterjee.’’
Singh named Sonia Gandhi, in particular. ??We will not file any petition with the EC regarding Sonia Gandhi and her two offices of profit - as MP and chairperson of the NAC - or against any other individual...The same rules do not apply to us and them.’’
