Court orders registration of case against U.P. Minister

Saturday 25 February 2006, by CHANDRAMOHAN*C.K.

DEHRA DUN: The troubles the Uttar Pradesh Haj and Minorities Welfare Minister, Haji Yaqub Quereshi, invited by announcing a bounty for the Danish cartoonist’s head for denigrating Prophet Muhammed do not seem to end. A local court here has ordered the police to register a case against the Minister, and inform it about the action taken by February 27.

The court’s directions came on a petition filed by Kuldeep Kumar a resident of Vikas Nagar near here. Talking to newspersons, Mr. Kumar said he was forced to approach the court as the police refused to register his FIR against Mr. Quereshi. "He [Mr. Quereshi] has, by announcing a reward of Rs. 51 crores and gold equal to the weight of the person who beheaded the Danish cartoonist, committed a crime that becomes more serious as he is holding a constitutional office. He must be brought to book," he said.

Observers feel that the Mr. Quereshi’s public outburst might be a well-calculated move to assume supremacy in Muslim politics.
