Warning against failure to deposit firearms

MEERUT: Ahead of the gram panchayat polls in Uttar Pradesh, 38,657 of 68,458 licence holders have deposited their arms in police stations across seven districts in Meerut-Shaharanpur.

Police of Meerut, Ghaziabad, Bulandshahr, Gautambudh Nagar, Baghpat, Saharanpur and Muzuffarnagar districts have been issued with ``stringent directions’’ to take action against those who have not deposited their arms yet, Meerut-Sharanpur range Deputy Inspector-General of Police Rajkumar Vishwakarma said here on Tuesday.

Those found disrupting free and fair conduct of panchayat polls would be booked under the UP Goonda Act and the National Security Act, he said.

In Meerut district, 7,235 of 13,674 arms licencees have deposited arms in police stations, 4,083 of 8,729 in Ghaziabad, 9,798 of 17,972 in Bulandshahr, 3,180 of 3,966 in Gautambudh Nagar, 2,051 of 3,786 in Baghpat, 5,726 of 6,559 in Saharanpur and 6,584 of 13,772 in Muzuffarnagar districts. — PTI
