CHENNAI: United Progressive Alliance chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will address the ideological concerns of the Left parties, Information and Broadcasting Minister Jaipal Reddy said on Wednesday.

Talking to reporters at the Chennai airport, he said the Centre had raised oil prices under "unavoidable circumstances."

Mr. Reddy said the Centre would examine the option of establishing a semi-regulatory authority to monitor the contents of television serials. The Group of Ministers was empowered to take action in the event of any objectionable scene.

To a question on the ban on smoking in films and TV serials, he said old films and serials were exempted. The ban would not be applicable to films on historical events and biographical works.

A national workshop would be held in New Delhi on July 6 to evolve a consensus on the issue of a ban on depicting consumption of tobacco products.
