New beautification plan for Chandigarh

CHANDIGARH: Punjab Governor S.F. Rodrigues, in his additional capacity as Administrator of the Union Territory of Chandigarh, has unfolded a new beautification plan for the main plaza, in Sector 17, of this "City Beautiful’’.

According to a Raj Bhavan communiqu?, the plan focuses on a clean environment, sanitation and cultural and recreational activities in the "City Centre", which has already been granted "Heritage site" status. Gen. Rodrigues said that this experiment, with the participative endeavour of the people, would be replicated in a phased manner to upgrade civic life.

At a meeting with senior officers of the Chandigarh Administration, Gen. Rodrigues described the city as "dynamic and vibrant," which occupied a unique position as "the hub of North-West India". It had a sound physical and social infrastructure catering to the needs of the adjoining States of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttaranchal and parts of Uttar Pradesh. "The city should not to be viewed in context of its one million population but that of a vast region with a population of six crores."
