BJP raises patriotic hackles & concern against reducing troops

Thursday 11 November 2004

NEW DELHI: The opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) urged the government to exercise caution on reducing troops in Jammu and Kashmir, saying the situation in the insurgency-prone state was deteriorating every day.

"The situation in Jammu and Kashmir does not warrant any troop reduction. On the other hand, terrorist attacks have been on the rise everyday," BJP leader V.K. Malhotra told IANS.

"One has to be more careful while taking decision on troop reduction," he said.

Earlier, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh announced a reduction of troops in Jammu and Kashmir during winter "in recognition of improvement in the situation in the state".

The prime minister’s statement came after a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), the highest security policy planning body of the government.
